Technological and laboratory description

Department of Material and Commodity Sciences and Textile Metrology disposes technological and metrological laboratories.


Technological laboratories enable to produce on laboratory scale fibres by wet spinning and two types of melt spinning system: classical and for bicomponent fibres. Moreover we are able to create polymeric cover on metal rod for wearable electronic purpose.

At the Department the spinning laboratory was also built. We can produce yarns and threads by two methods: ring spinning and open – end spinning. The Department disposes micro – spinning room for cotton – like fibres and set of machines for half-industrial scale and laboratory card machine for wool – like fibres, laboratory stand for fibres and for twine production.

The biggest laboratory was built for nonwovens technology, were classical and novel technology of nonwovens production are used. We can produce nonwovens from staple fibres by card and aerodynamic method and directly from melted or solved polymer by melt – blown technique or electrospinning. Our laboratory stand for electrospinning has 32 nozzles spinning head, which enables us forming a fleece with size 1 meter width. Web bonding we can realize by needle punching, thermal bonding and chemical bonding. At the Department the 3D printer is also available.

Last technological laboratory at the Department of Material and Commodity Sciences and Textile Metrology is a laboratory of surface treatment, where modifications can be done using plasma treatment, ink jet printer for functional printings, coating machine and evaporation system.


Our metrological laboratory consist of following rooms:

  • Laboratory of polymer assessment, equipped with HPLC, and gel chromatography and spectrofotometers FTIR and UV – VIS.
  • Laboratory of supermolecular structure equipped with diffractometers WAXS and SAXS
  • Laboratory of microscopy with two scanning microscopes: JEOL i FEI NOVA. The second one is equipped with additional EDS for analysis of chemical composition of surface. We are able to made a mapping by thermal, electrical conductivity and strucute of surface by AFM. We can also assess an object using fluorescent microscope. Analysis of microscopic pictures is possible using a software like LUCIA G and Micro 95.
  • Laboratory of thermal assessment allows to analyse a thermal characteristic of polymeric products using TG, DSC, DTMA and set for measuring of MFI.
  • Laboratory of mechanical properties is equipped with tensile tester machines INSTRON with max. load 250 kN, 100 kN and 2 kN. All machines have got wide range of clamps which enables us analysis of different forces like tensile, compression and bending. We can conduct our experiment in standardised conditions as well as in wet state or in thermal chamber (till to 350oC). moreover at the Laboratory we can measure multidirectional forces using a bursting methods with pneumatic and hydraulic method or by ball, as well as a friction resistivity by Martindale and tear resistance by Elmendorf method.
  • Laboratory of comfort created by textiles is equipped with Kawabata Evaluation System and FAST system for analysis of sensorial comfort. Biophysical comfort can be assessed by sweeting hot plate and by thermal manikin NEWTON. Manikin has got options of walking, sweeting and breathing. Additionally properties like sorption of liquid, air permeability waterproof and rain resistant can be assessed. Laboratory has controlled climatic condition, manikin is located in climatic chamber, where the temperature control range is – (minus) 20oC do + 50oC, relative humidity 30 - 99% (for temperatures +4oC - +50oC) and air rate 0,1 - 1 m/s.
  • Chemical laboratory enables us analysis of dyeing resistance for friction, sweeting, washing and ironing and UV radiation, as well as analysis of destruction degree of natural fibres and fibre type identification. We can also measure an accelerating ageing using QSUN and QUV chambers.
  • Laboratory of porosity assessment enables to types of measurements: by adsorption of gases and mercury porosimetry.
  • Laboratory of filtration with two systems for filtration: oil aerosol and sodium chloride aerosol.
  • Laboratory of fire resistance is equipped with system for analysis of fire resistance, thermal flow and LOI.
  • Laboratory of electrical properties of textiles equipped with systems for assessment of surface and crossing electrical properties of textiles.

Our laboratory Lab – Tex fulfils requirements of EN ISO IEC 17025 standard confirmed by certificate of accreditation no. 1421 delivered by Polish Center of Accreditation.
